Hummingbirds at World Famous Colombia Birding Destination

The ProAves El Dorado Ecolodge in the Santa Marta Mountains in Northern Colombia is one of the world’s premier destinations for birders. The rare and endemic Santa Marta Woodstar and other spectacular hummingbirds can be seen in the area. In addition to a few “old friends,” we found a female Santa Marta Woodstar and the local subspecies of the Tyrian Metaltail, which may be separated into its own species in the future.

Many hummingbirds can be found feeding on flowers and feeding at the feeders both at the lodge and at many other places in the immediate area. The road to the lodge is famous for being rough, taking special drivers and large 4 x 4 vehicles to get there!
