Metoprolol is a popular prescription medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure.
It's in a class of drugs called Beta blockers.
Metoprolol is a 'specific' Beta blocker because it only blocks the Beta-1 receptor which you find in the heart and kidneys.
That's a good things because it avoids some of the side effects you see in other non-specific beta blockers.
However, that doesn't mean metoprolol can't have side effects.
Also, if you can stay under a 100mg dose you tend to see less Membrane Stabilizing Activity and Intrinsic Sympathomimetic Activity. Big terms for sure and I give you simple explanations of what they mean in the video.
Again, that's why dosing matters for metoprolol.
As far as side effects go the most common one is low blood pressure. Makes sense because you're treating high blood pressure so sometimes it just goes too low with some people.
I also touch on four more common side effects in the video.
I also touch on the most problematic side effect in the video (but not the most common).
Have you taken metoprolol before? Know someone who did? I'd love to hear what you thought in the comments.
Thanks,
Curtis Alexander, Pharmacist
