Take On Me - a-ha // Amy Turk +

A first glimpse at my collaboration with Lauren Scott, revisiting one of her favourite songs, and modeled after the acoustic version a-ha performed on MTV Unplugged in 2017.

When Lauren and I decided to collaborate we agreed that it was important to showcase different sides of the harp - we both thought it was a must to play something with my ‪@harp_e_harp‬ and Lauren is a great champion of the lever harp, and so it was this starting point that led us to this song.

Lauren suggested this particular version of Take On Me, from a-ha's MTV Unplugged show, and I was really intrigued by it having never heard it before. It's so instantly recognisable as the 1984 pop classic, but the vibe is so haunting, melancholy, in complete contrast to the original. It sounds like the ghost of this song to me, a wonderful, wistful retrospective on something from a distant future.

Naturally I wanted to put the Harp-E to work on the melody line and try to squeeze as much expression as I could out of the longer, held notes using bends and vibrato - this approach is still so new and fresh to me as a harpist and it's a joy to be able to explore the harp in this way as a lead instrument.

The set dressing for this one was Lauren's idea and I loved creating a scene inspired by Hygge, a nice little nod to the scandi roots of this song. Plus we got our cups of tea into the wide shot! I'm looking forward to plenty more harping and cups of tea with Lauren this year.
