Lionel MPC Quality 1971 vs. 1986: Did It Improve or Get WORSE?

It cannot be denied that during Lionel Trains' O gauge Postwar era from 1945 to 1969, production values, especially for low-budget starter set trains, continually degraded as the economy and demands for toy trains changed. Metal trucks and couplers were slowly replaced with all-plastic designs, and couplers changed from the remote electromagnetic coil type to so-called thumbtack types, often to couplers that did not operate at all. Details and features disappeared, and motors became simpler and less powerful.

Did this same trend follow during the so-called MPC era of Lionel O gauge train production? Let’s compare two train sets - one made near the beginning of the era in 1971 and another made at the end of the era in 1986.
