In medieval England, football was far removed from the structured sport we recognize today. Known as 'mob football,' it was a chaotic and often violent pastime. Matches were typically played on special occasions like Shrove Tuesday or Christmas, with entire villages participating. The goalposts could be several miles apart, and the game often involved hundreds of players.
These early forms of football were more similar to crowd fighting rather than the modern sport we know today. There were no standardized rules, and games often resulted in injuries and even deaths. Despite its rough and violent nature, mob football was immensely popular, reflecting the communal spirit and local rivalries of the time.
The 1970s and 80s were a hectic time for English football. While the game continued to grow in popularity, it was also plagued by issues such as hooliganism and stadium disasters. The Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, where 39 fans died during a match between Liverpool and Juventus, shocked the world. Four years later, the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 saw 96 Liverpool fans lose their lives in a crush during an FA Cup semi-final. These tragic events led to significant changes in stadium safety and the way football was governed in England. The Taylor Report, published in the aftermath of Hillsborough, recommended all-seater stadiums and improved safety measures, revolutionizing the matchday experience.
