Unboxing and reviewing HG 1990 Gundam - The first HG [4K]

In today's video we take a thorough look at a vintage Gunpla release. This is the HG 1990 Gundam, the first "official" High Grade Gundam release. While it may be high grade in name, it seems more real grade in nature, incorporating an interior skeletal structure for the articulation, as well as added surface detailing.

Technically speaking, this isn't the first kit to incorporate the MS Joint frame, that was first seen in the 1989 no grade Musha Gundam. What I find fascinating is that Bandai has been trying to incorporate these interior skeletal structures into 1/144 scale from 1989/1990, right at the 10 year mark of Gunpla.

Looking at the box we can see all the typical HGUC mainstays, with the color square that indicates what series it's from, to the gold trim on the outside, the box hasn't really changed much in the past 35 years. This is a classic example of, if it's not broken, don't fix it.

This kit is vintage and requires some extra TLC to really get the most out of it, the construction for the body pieces are all split in half. This gives us a seamline in the center of the legs and the arms, it's also really easy to misalign these pieces as the snap together pegs are only in a few areas. While the box says it's a fully snappable kit out of the box I definitely think some glue is necessary for seam line removal.

What's really interesting about this kit beyond the added surface detail and pseudo inner frame, is the way the colored pieces are molded. These pieces are injection molded together, the torso is a perfect example. The yellow for the vents, blue for the chest, yellow for the collar and red for the abdomen are all molded on one piece, we can snip this one piece off and we already have half the torso completed. If it wasnt for the seam line removal this build would have taken me under an hour because of how streamlined the injection makes the assembly.

I hope you enjoy this review and this look back in time to see how HG started in Gunpla, it's such a trip to see how far Bandai's modeling tech has come, yet how they thought ahead even back in the 90's.
