After a complaint in 2021, a new report by Repórter Brasil and Finnwatch shows that pollution in the Itacaiúnas River continues to harm the traditional livelihood of the Xikrin people and fuel growing conflicts within the community.
Vale, the company that owns the Onça Puma mine, and the Xikrin, an Indigenous people living in the affected area, have been engaged in a legal battle for years over the damage caused by the company’s mines.
