We live in Southern California, and there's no real winter here, but a good thing is that there are so many different places around, and if we take just a 2 hours drive, we find ourselves in a real winter wonderland! A bunch of snow, up to our knees! And sooo much fun.
The place is called Big Bear lake and it's a very beautiful recreational town. If you want to sled in Big Bear Lake for free, you can go to Aspen Glen Picnic area and just do it. There are several hills for any taste. We had so much fun!
Although - beware of the parking rules. The parking lot is very small. People park along the road, and there is no sign forbidding it. We've bought our 5 dollars parking pass in town but it didn't help, we still got a ticket. Turns out that you can't park in snow conditions, though there is no clear information about it anywhere.
