1st Sgt. Leggio J. Sassi - Prior to, during, and following the Second World War, Lee Sassi served the cause of liberty and freedom for 10 dedicated years. At the age of 15 he enlisted into the United States Army in 1938. After completing a three year enlistment prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Lee enlisted again as America entered the war. Assigned to Company C of the 44th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division, Lee fought his way through France, Belgium, and into Germany itself. After being wounded in action he recovered at Woodrow Wilson Military Hospital in Washington D.C. After being discharged from wartime service at the conclusion of his recovery, Lee enlisted again serving three more years which included occupation duty in Japan and Korea.
Through his relentless effort, bravery, dedication to duty, and the honor that carried him towards absolute victory, the Legion d’honneur medal recognizes those endearing characteristics exhibited by all those of the Greatest Generation.
Conceived over two centuries ago by Napoléon Bonaparte, First Consul of the First Republic of France, the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur was devised to reward eminent military and civil merits in the service of France. Despite the march of time, the award is still the highest distinction that can be bestowed upon those that have met that exacting criteria and accomplished those great deeds.
The broadcast will begin about 2:20 PM on November 28th, 2025, and will conclude at approximately 4:00 PM. The event programming will begin at 2:30 PM Eastern Time
