Problem 4. Obtain the attitude of the layers below the unconformity before the second deformation phase.
Attached figure shows the current orientation of rocks beneath and above the angular unconformity. This unconformity (the black and bold plain) shows that the layers beneath the unconformity surface were already tilted at the time when the layers above the unconformity were laid down. The orientation of the older rocks at that time was different from their present orientation. It is because a tilting of the whole sequence of layers has occurred since new layers were laid down. Moreover, the later stage of deformation produced the current non-horizontal orientation of the new layers (layers above the unconformity).
