There are 2 pronunciations of 'were' in English:
STRONG 'were' pronunciation: /'wɜː/
WEAK 'were' pronunciation: /wə/
In today's English pronunciation tutorial I explain how and when to use both the strong and weak pronunciation of 'were'.
Don't make these Mistakes:
1. /w/ pronounced as /v/ - make sure that when you pronounce the 'w' letter in both the strong and weak pronunciations of 'were', that you pronounce a /w/ sound and not a /v/ sound. The simple way to see if you are pronouncing a /w/ sound is to make sure that your bottom teeth do NOT touch your top lip.
For complete training on /w/ vs /v/, and how to clearly pronounce both sounds confidently, then watch this quick playlist here: • W Sound
2. The long 'ere' sound in 'were'
When you use the STRONG pronunciation of 'were', it's very important to pronounce the 'ere' sound correctly. This is one of the hardest vowel sounds for non-native English speakers and it's important to pronounce it clearly if you want to feel confident when you speak. Watch this short playlist here to discover step by step how to pronounce this sound clearly, and how to integrate it into your English speaking:
• The LONG Schwa in British English (Complet...
3. For standard 'British modern RP' pronunciation, in both the strong and weak pronunciation of 'were', make sure you don't pronounce an /r/ sound - i's written but not pRonounced
Once you can pronounce both sounds clearly, the next step is to know when to use the strong and weak pronunciation of 'were'.
Then once you can do that, the next step is to integrate it into your English speaking, which you can do by following along to the practice examples in the video (using my signature 'word chains' principle).
By the end of this video, you should be able to pronounce 'were' clearly in both its strong and weak form... you should know WHEN to use either the strong or weak pronunciation, and you should be able to integrate it into your English speaking.
