Weird Motorized Instrument

This is an older one, but i realized i don't have a video of it on this channel, so i made a quick track. Everything you hear was made with this instrument, no other sound sources were used. The Instrument was almost completely made from found objects, except for the electronics on the inside and the rubber bands. It's great for experimental music and other weird stuff, but can also be used for more traditional genres. On my Insta there's a video where i recorded a quick dub live impro with it for example.
FAQ:
What's on the inside?
Inside, there's a small PWM DC motor controller board to power the little motor. Also, there's three piezo disks (aka "contact microphones") glued into the box, wired in parallel to the output jack socket.
What are those three long rods protruding from the ass end of the instrument?
These are used to bend the pitch of the strings. If you pay attention, you can hear it in the video at 00:38 (my hand bending the rods is out of frame). At 00:47 i use a bow directly on one of the rods with a big spring attached for a more complex sound.
...and the two big nuts below it?
Those are counterweights for better balance.
Who's the doggo?
A good boy.
This sounds terrible!
That's not a question.
Will you make more of these? Can i buy one?
No and yes. I won't build more of this specific instrument because its design was dictated by the junkjard parts i had lying around at that moment. So it's one of a kind. BUT if you live in the EU, or even better in Germany (I won't ship overseas) and have some money to spend, drop me a message. My username here at gmail dott comm. You can also write me on instagram, same name there, there's also a link in my channel description.
What are the things attached to the kalimba tines?
Little magnets and springs. The Magnets are used to change the pitch of individual tines, which is much quicker than the traditional way of tuning a kalimba. They allow for much deeper pitches with shorter tines. The springs also influence the pitch of the tine (because they also add weight), and they add a lot of tonal complexity. Depending on where they are placed along the two axles (length of the tine and height of the spring), the resulting sounds can be dramatically different and really interesting. Even small changes in the spring's position can lead to extreme changes of timbre. You can hear the effect of the springs on the tines' sound at the beginning of the video (the recording of the sound in that part only has a bit of delay in the background, apart from that it's clean).
Can i hear the clean sound?
The intro is almost clean, there's only a little delay in the background. There's also a little saturation and compression on the master for the whole track, but it's subtle.
How does the instrument smell?
Ask doggo.
Free samplepack?
I'm thinking about making one, yes. Stay tuned. If i do, i will deffinitely post about it. Follow me here and on insta (@aaronkarnov) so you won't miss it.
