MetroTV, The historic Vondelkerk church in Amsterdam was largely destroyed after a major fire broke out early Thursday morning, with flames quickly spreading through the 154-year-old building. Footage showed firefighters battling the blaze as thick smoke billowed from the building and enveloped the surrounding area. The fire, which started at the top of the church, destroyed the original wooden interior and roof, causing the 50-meter tower and most of the roof to collapse into the center of the building. Although the neo-Gothic stone exterior of the church is still standing, authorities say the building is beyond repair. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, while nearby residents are advised to keep their doors and windows closed due to the thick smoke.
