Harmonica Valve Tool with Reed Lifter

Curled harmonica windsaver valves can create troublesome noise and a loss of compression. Warm breath from the player while blowing softens the outside valves in their open position, and over time can cause them to deform and stay curled open. Inside valves are also softened by blow breath, but because they are held flat during blowing they rarely cause trouble.

A tool from Rick Epping is now available which will easily straighten curled valves without having to remove them from the reedplate. With the ridge side facing up, simply insert the tool between the two valve layers, rest a finger lightly on the top layer, and draw the tool straight out. The tool comes with a flat shim which can be used to protect the bottom layer of more delicate types of windsaver valves.

The valve tool also comes with a reed lifter on the other end of it. The reed lifter is based on a tool that accordion technicians have used for years, and is designed to lift the free end of a blow reed up and out of its slot to make it accessible for tuning.
