Hosted by Ubud's political leader Agung Jakarta Sulawesi Mas, "Indonesia: New Nation of Asia" (1959) traces the history of Indonesia from Dutch rule to independence; shows life in crowded cities and in the home of village families; examines the natural resources, religions, art and industries of the country, pointing out how living standards are improving. He visits important sites and describes the political, religious, and economic situation on the island of Bali in the Indonesia of 1959. Six years after the film was made, the Sukarno government was replaced by the Suharto dictatorship and any hopes of an independent path were largely dashed. This film explains the hopes for the future and the basic elements of the country after freedom from the Dutch.
Produced by William Deneen, in collaboration with Marguerita Harmon Bro and Peter Gosling, Ph.D.

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction.
