Vinland Saga - Father and Son [Piano]

This is my piano arrangement for the soundtrack "Father and Son" from Vinland Saga. The original Japanese title is "父子" (fushi) which means "father and child" and can also be interpreted as both "father and son" and "father and daughter". I wanted to mention this because the track is also played in a scene with Thors and Ylva (his daughter) in episode1.

I love this track. This is one of the more bright soundtracks in Vinland Saga and reminds me a lot of Thors. Truly an amazing character who is true to his principles. He is a loving and devoted character, an advocate of peace and freedom. I enjoyed pretty much all of the scenes with him and especially loved the dynamic and relationship between him and his wife Helga.

One other scene that comes to mind is the scene in episode8 (picture from the thumbnail) after a duel between Askeladd and Thorfinn. While Askeladd & crew is having a feast inside a house Thorfinn is alone outside in a ship dozing off and dreaming about Thors talking to him.

"You upset? Does it hurt, kid? Do you want to take revenge? Well, you're my son. If I tolf you not to seek revenge, you wouldn't listen. This is a problem... I don't know what to say. Maybe you'll just have to realize it on your own. I told you, right? You don't have any enemies. No one has any enemies... A true warrior doesn't need a sword."

Right after that Thorfinn awakes and out of reflex threatens the girl slave (with his knife) who approached him to bring him food. After talking to her a bit he then tells her about Vinland with the exact same words his father used describing it to the slave at the beginning of the series.

I really loved that scene because it is one of most meaningful scenes in the series in my opinion. At this point in time Thorfinn has not yet learned that he indeed has no enemies. He is fixated on his revenge and sees nothing else. Thors understands that and accepts that Thorfinn has to make his own experiences to lead him to more understanding. On the other hand Thorfinn can easily understand his father's passion about Vinland which is manifested by him telling the slave about this land of freedom and abundance (goosebumps scene). This also shows that deep within he knows there is more to (his) life than revenge.

Those scenes are a great example from this series for a parent-child relationship fitting for this soundtracks name. Although this soundtrack is not playing in episode8 I have to think of scenes like this when I hear this soundtrack.
