Did you know that teaching your students to memorize words is actually not beneficial? Research tells us that our brains do not store words as whole units. Meaning we cannot look at a word and memorize it the same way we could memorize the shape of a triangle or square.
Our brains store word through a mental process (key word PROCESS) called orthographic mapping. Kilpatrick says that reading look-alike words helps promote orthographic mapping. When we use words that look similar visually, we can help break habits like looking at the picture, looking at only the first letter, or even just guessing the word.
Students cannot rely on context clues and they must attend to each grapheme as they read.
