The Kelly Family: 'We Have An Irish Mentality!' | Interview | TMF

The Kelly Family, an Irish-American musical ensemble, comprises a multi-generational clan primarily composed of nine siblings. During their formative years, their parents occasionally joined them on stage. Their musical repertoire spans rock, pop, and folk genres, with performances in English, Spanish, German, and Basque. The ensemble achieved global recognition through chart-topping albums and successful concerts, particularly in continental Europe, notably in Germany, the Benelux countries, Scandinavia, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, and Portugal, and to a lesser extent in Ireland. Their album sales have surpassed 20 million copies since the early 1980s, and during the 1990s, they secured the 6th position among the most favored musical acts in Germany. However, despite their American roots, they remain relatively obscure in the United States.

Over a significant span, the group projected an image of vagabond-like charm, embracing a wandering lifestyle that saw them journeying across Europe in a double-decker bus and a houseboat. Their appearance was accentuated by their diverse and often self-made attire, as well as the distinctive long hair sported by both male and female band members. The Kelly Family's unity gradually dissolved starting in 2000, leading them to predominantly perform as individuals or smaller sub-groups within the ensemble, adopting a more conventional appearance.
