Beginnings of the 3-phase AC technology in western Poland - Ryszard Łukaszuk IEEE Szczecin 2025 4/8

This video was recorded during the international scientific seminar “The Three-Phase System as a Breakthrough in European and World Electrical Engineering,” held on June 10, 2025, at the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin. The seminar was organized in connection with the unveiling ceremony of the IEEE Milestone commemorative plaque, honoring the historic three-phase power transmission achieved by Michał Doliwo-Dobrowolsky, Oskar von Miller, and Charles E. L. Brown (June 9, 2025).

The event was co-organized by SEP (Association of Polish Electrical Engineers) – the largest Polish scientific and technical organization in the electrical field – and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the world’s largest engineering organization, which awards the Milestone distinction for groundbreaking achievements in electrical engineering and electronics.

A special role in preparing and leading the seminar was played by Dr. Piotr Szymczak – scientist, historian of electrical engineering, long-time president of SEP (serving two terms from 2014 to 2022), and currently chairman of the SEP Central Historical Committee and the National Committee for the Promotion of Michał Doliwo-Dobrowolsky’s Legacy. This event crowned his more than 25 years of dedicated work to commemorate Doliwo-Dobrowolsky’s achievements and to promote the Polish contribution to global power engineering.

The central figure of the seminar was Michał Doliwo-Dobrowolsky (1862–1919) – an outstanding Polish engineer and inventor, creator of the world’s first squirrel-cage induction motor, as well as the three-phase generator and transformer. His innovations enabled the groundbreaking transmission of electric power during the 1891 International Electrotechnical Exhibition in Frankfurt: electricity was transmitted over a distance of 175 km, at a voltage of 15 kV, with a power of 300 HP and an efficiency of 75%. The transmission line was built in just a few months, which marked the beginning of global electrification and the development of modern power transmission systems.
