The history of Afghanistan is as diverse as the people who have lived it. One witness to this history is a man named Dr. Ghafar. If you were to pass him on the street, nothing particular would strike you about the demeanor of his elderly, quiet, and somewhat tatty appearance.

Yet, if you were to stop, take a moment, and smile at those tired eyes that hide a sparkle of unspoken depth, you would find yourself a guest in his house, stepping into a world you might not have thought possible—a world that has remained hidden in a place cut off from the rest of the world for decades. Dr. Ghafar would take you on a journey across time and continents.

With a curious mind and a collection of historical accounts, even his house and the countless items within it come alive, unveiling a never-ending treasure trove of memories. A philosopher and collector, Dr. Ghafar introduced the game of chess to Afghanistan. He participated in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, representing his country with pride and dedication. As one of the first sports physicians to graduate from Kabul University, he educated generations of doctors and authored numerous books on the subject.
Like many others, he had every opportunity to leave the country, but he chose to stay. Many belittle his decision, but he wonders: who else, if not those who have known the beautiful side of Afghanistan, could bring about the much-needed change to the country?

This is the story of a man whose memories are filled with color from a time when events were captured in black and white and whose life, now documented in vibrant hues, reflects a present-day reality tinged with grey.
