Freezing rain, significant ice accumulation hit Middle Tennessee: FULL FORECAST

FOX 17 News is in Code Red for freezing rain and significant ice accumulation across Middle Tennessee that will lead to dangerous conditions.

Freezing rain and sleet continue to create dangerous travel conditions across Middle Tennessee as the back edge of a major winter storm system slowly moves east.

Light freezing rain and sleet will persist for several more hours, with snow continuing in northwestern counties. The back edge of the main system is now approaching the Tennessee River.

Temperatures have already fallen below freezing in Nashville, meaning any precipitation that falls will stick on contact and add to existing ice.

A diagonal swath from Wayne County to Sumner County remains the hardest-hit area, where significant ice accumulation has been reported. Around half an inch of ice had already built up in parts of Nashville earlier today.

The worst of the precipitation should taper off later this afternoon, but light snow showers are possible this evening. While little accumulation is expected, the snow could add another thin glaze of ice on top of already slick surfaces.

VERY icy conditions are expected overnight as temperatures continue to drop.

Low temperatures are forecast to fall into the low teens to upper single digits. Wind chills are expected to dip to 5 to 10 degrees below zero, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory.

An Extreme Cold Warning has also been issued for Sunday, from 6 p.m. Monday through noon Tuesday, for wind chills expected to range from 10 to 15 degrees below zero.
