【概要（以下引用）】
平安初期に定期的に開かれていた市が始まりで当初は、
今宮神社の境内で、正月12日に初買日として開かれ、
｢初市｣ともいわれました。

神社の拝殿に｢市神社｣が安置され、1年の商売繁盛、家内安全、
健康祈願を参拝しましたが、年々｢市｣が盛んになるにつれ、
境内だけでなく参道にまで露店が出るようになり、販売の品物も
縁起物、植木、食物、雑貨などに変わり、｢市｣の呼び名も｢花市｣と
言われるようになりました。
車の往来が増えたため、昭和48年からは場所を末広通りに移して
開催しています。

ダルマやお飾りなどの縁起物などの植木、食べ物などの露天商
約300店が軒を連ねる関東でも有数の花市です。
例年の人出は約10万人でピークは夕方です。

Originating from a market held periodically in the early Heian period,
it was originally held on the 12th of January as the first day of the year
to buy things, and was also called the "Hatsuichi" (first market).

The "Ichijinja" (City Shrine) was placed in the shrine's worship hall,
and people visited to pray for prosperity in business, safety of
their families, and good health for the year. As the market became
more popular each year, stalls began to be set up not only in the shrine
grounds but also on the approach to the shrine, and the items sold
changed to lucky charms, plants, food, miscellaneous goods, etc.,
and the "market" came to be called a "flower market."

Due to the increase in vehicular traffic, the market was moved to
Suehiro-dori in 1973.

It is one of the leading flower markets in the Kanto region,
with about 300 stalls selling lucky charms such as daruma dolls
and decorations, plants, food, and other items.

The average attendance is about 100,000 people,
and the peak is in the evening.
