In June 1943, German prisoner Klaus Weber stood in the back of an American Army truck, trying to understand what was happening. Captured in Tunisia, shipped across the Atlantic, expecting brutal prison conditions—instead, he was told he was going swimming. Swimming. In the middle of a war. As a prisoner.
This is the forgotten story of how America treated 10,000 German POWs held in Florida during World War II. Following the 1929 Geneva Convention, these enemy soldiers received the same food, housing, and medical care as American troops. They picked oranges in citrus groves, worked 8-hour days, and once they met their quotas, they could rest.

But the most shocking part? After long workdays under the Florida sun, American guards took prisoners to nearby lakes—and let them swim. Guards and prisoners splashed in the water together, shared cigarettes, ate the same sandwiches. Enemies playing in the surf while millions died across the ocean.

This wasn't supposed to happen. Wars don't include moments where enemies laugh together in warm water. But it did happen. At Camp Blanding, at Lake Geneva, under the watch of guards who carried rifles but rarely needed them.

Then Germany surrendered. Photos emerged from concentration camps. Everything changed. Rations were cut. The friendly atmosphere disappeared. The swimming trips stopped. The reckoning had begun.
Klaus Weber returned to a destroyed Munich in 1946, carrying memories of Florida that made no sense—except they proved that even in war, even between enemies, humanity can survive if people choose to preserve it.
