Nutrition is the process of taking food and using it for growth and energy.
Animals cannot make their own food and depend on plants or other animals.
Humans are omnivores because they eat both plants and animals.
The process of nutrition includes ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation and egestion.
The human digestive system helps in breaking down food into simple substances.
The digestive system starts from the mouth and ends at the anus.
Teeth help in chewing and grinding food in the mouth.
Saliva mixes with food and contains the enzyme salivary amylase.
Salivary amylase begins the digestion of starch into sugar.
The food pipe is also called the oesophagus.
Food moves through the oesophagus by a movement called peristalsis.
The stomach is a muscular bag that stores and mixes food.
Gastric juice in the stomach contains hydrochloric acid and enzymes.
Hydrochloric acid kills harmful bacteria in food.
Proteins begin to digest in the stomach.
The small intestine is the longest part of the digestive system.
Complete digestion of food takes place in the small intestine.
The liver produces bile juice which helps in fat digestion.
The pancreas releases pancreatic juice for digestion.
The inner wall of the small intestine has finger-like structures called villi.
Villi help in absorption of digested food into the blood.
The large intestine absorbs water and minerals from undigested food.
Waste material is stored in the rectum.
Egestion is the removal of undigested food through the anus.
Grass-eating animals are called ruminants.
Ruminants chew cud to digest cellulose present in grass.
A cow has a four-chambered stomach.
Amoeba feeds using pseudopodia.
Digestion in Amoeba occurs inside the food vacuole.
Undigested food in Amoeba is thrown out of the body.
