En 1841, George Sand découvre au château de Boussac les six tapisseries de la Dame à la licorne. Elle alerte Prosper Mérimée. George Sand est en effet convaincue d'avoir trouvé d'extraordinaires tapisseries médiévales. L'écrivain Prosper Mérimée, alors inspecteur des Monuments historiques, avait été l'amant de George Sand quelques années auparavant.
The Lady and the Unicorn (a series of six tapestries) is often considered one of the greatest works of art of the Middle Ages in Europe. The tapestries were rediscovered in 1841 by Prosper Mérimée in Boussac castle (owned at the time by the subprefect of the Creuse) where they had been suffering damage from their storage conditions. The novelist George Sand brought public attention to the tapestries in her works at the time. The cycle has been in the Musée de Cluny (Musée du Moyen-Âge) in Paris since 1882.
