Uchisar opens the doors to the Cappadocia region, the heart of tourism in Türkiye. Every year, it is a common meeting point for adventurers in search of stories and unusual landscapes. And even though modern hotels have begun to taint the dreamlike hoodoo views, the town remains popular for its quaint aesthetic and strategic location.

History
The first mention of Uchisar was found in a 14th century chronicle written by Aziz ibn Ardasir, but the region was already inhabited long before that. During the time of the Hittites, the cliffs were probably used as natural ramparts against attackers. When the Byzantines occupied the region in the 7th century AD. BC, they created a buffer zone on the territory in order to intercept Islamic expansion. Then when the Muslims succeeded in conquering the region, they also took advantage of the topography of the land to strengthen their defense. Among other things, they set up bases with caravanserais in different strategic locations.

In 1985, UNESCO listed Uchisar and the Cappadocia region as an Extraordinary Natural and Cultural Heritage of the World. The town was then placed under protection within the territory of the Goreme National Natural and Historical Park in 1986.

Chaque année, c’est un point de rendez-vous commun pour les aventuriers en quête d’histoires et de paysages insolites. Et même si les hôtels modernes ont commencé à entacher les vues oniriques sur les cheminées de fées, la ville reste populaire pour son esthétique surannée et son emplacement stratégique.

Histoire
La première mention d’Uchisar a été trouvée dans une chronique du XIVe siècle écrite par Aziz ibn Ardasir, mais la contrée était déjà habitée bien longtemps avant cela. Au temps des Hittites, les falaises ont probablement été exploitées comme des remparts naturels contre les assaillants. Lorsque les Byzantins ont occupé la région au VIIe siècle ap. J.-C., ils ont créé une zone tampon sur le territoire afin d’intercepter l’expansion islamique. Ensuite quand les musulmans ont réussi à conquérir la région, ils ont également profité de la topographie du terrain pour renforcer leur défense. Ils ont entre autres aménagé des bases avec des caravansérails à différents endroits stratégiques.

En 1985, l’UNESCO a inscrit Uchisar et la région de la Cappadoce au Patrimoine naturel et culturel extraordinaire du monde. La ville a ensuite été placée sous protection au sein du territoire du Parc national naturel et historique de Goreme en 1986.
