At the WoodenBoat School in June 2015, Mark Kaufman led eight students in the construction of their own skin-on-frame Aleutian baidarkas. They built from plans of a design known as MAE 593-76. In 1845, Russian explorer I.G. Vaznesenskii measured the offsets for this design from a baidarka found on Akun Island in the Aleutians. See www.arctickayaks.com for plans.
Mark’s students chose from three lengths—14’6”, 16’6”, or 19’—of this model and built their baidarkas in just one week. Students Ralph Young and Will Kyle built the 16’6 model, and Jon Richer, Bruce Boer, Doug Ward, Wesley Anderson, Tom Palmer, and Jim Heinbach built 19’ design. In the photograph by Heather Kaufman of the finished baidarkas seen at the end of this video, you’ll see the builders, from left to right in the front row, Ralph Young, Jon Richer, Bruce Boer, Doug Ward, Will Kyle. In the back, left to right, Wesley Anderson, Tom Palmer, Jim Heinbach, and Mark Kaufman. For more information on classes, visit www.thewoodenboatschool.com.
