James Kalm has been waiting excitedly for the last several months, ever since he heard of that a Francis Picabia show was coming to the Hauser & Wirth Gallery in Chelsea. “Eternal Beginning” originated at the Gallery’s Paris Headquarters, and debuted here in New York in early May. This is the first museum quality exhibition to focus solely on the final years of Picabia’s practice. Having passed through phases of almost every major art movement of the twentieth century from Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, to Dada and Surrealism, in his last decade Picabia was pretty much considered an art movement of one. His pictures of dark primordial forms, and the provocative “dot” paintings, are a unique path between Abstract Expressionism, and Surrealism. With a nonchalant approach to the materials of painting, these late works are still controversial and being riffed on by young painters like Damien Hirst, and Joe Bradley.
