In November 2017, Emmerson Mnangagwa, then Vice President of Zimbabwe, was dismissed by President Robert Mugabe. The firing came after growing tensions within the ruling party, ZANU–PF, largely cantered around the succession struggle to replace the aging Mugabe.
Mugabe accused Mnangagwa of disloyalty and deceit, while Mnangagwa and his supporters claimed that the move was orchestrated by Mugabe’s wife, Grace Mugabe, and her faction of the party known as “G40”, who wanted Grace to succeed her husband.
