"2020 was the strangest year of my life, and like a solar eclipse where it feels like night even though the sun is out, the pandemic and lockdown that followed left me feeling a bit lost in the dark, even during the day.When Michael Linus Bock commissioned me to compose a piece for Bass Trombone, my first instinct was to make some kind of musical reflection on the year, and “Sonnenfinsternis” was the result. I am very moved by the full, dark, low tones of the instrument, and paired with an organ that is reminiscent of the church organs I heard as a child, they create an evocative mood that gives me some comfort when I hear it now, despite it’s overall unsettling sounds and somber origins."
