Want to teach your child to read? Consider this simple book first. The elevator pitch: "With more than one million copies sold, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a remarkable step-by-step, phonics-based program that teaches your child to read in just 20 minutes a day." This learning to read book taught my middle child to read efficiently and simply, using the Direct Instruction method and several phonics-based and research-driven concepts promoted by the science of reading. She was reading fluently by lesson 75. My littlest, on the other hand, needed even more explicit phonics instruction to achieve fluency. This book is a great entry book for beginner readers because it is an inexpensive way to teach and assess your child using research-based principles. If your child needs further instruction or supplementation, I recommend Foundations from Logic of English and/or Rooted in Language, both of which worked wonders for my littlest.
