For the first time on Pathways of the Past, I recreate a prehistoric hunting implement in its entirety. The Groswater Complex is an archaeological culture from Newfoundland, Labrador, and the Quebec Lower North Shore that dates to ~3200-1800 years BP. They are known for making plano-convex flint endblades which tipped harpoons for hunting seals. Based on a number of stone, antler, and wooden artifacts found at Groswater sites, I recreate one of their harpoons with stone tools. Along the way, I discuss this Paleoarctic culture and the archaeological materials they left behind.
A special thank you to the Port Aux Choix Archaeology Project for providing high resolution images of Groswater Artifacts.
