Guru Dutt Bharadwaj quit his IT job in Bengaluru five years ago to move into the tiny village of Darasaguppe in Srirangapatna to look after his aging parents. With his parent’s traditional home as backdrop, his fondness for cooking led to the creation of Thotada Mane, rustic vegetarian dining amidst a verdant garden setting, that seeks to offer not just mere sustenance but also a refreshing glimpse into an alternate way of life. In doing so, he employed an all-women team of housewives from the neighbouring villages, working alongside them in the kitchen to serve up traditional family recipes, some tweaked with playful twists to ensure there is something for everyone who arrives here. I drive the 130 kilometres from Bengaluru to savour this unique experience that literally comes across as a breath of fresh air in the current circumstances. Special Bhajji
A tasty bhajji platter, the crunch of tomatoes, onions and coriander add an element of ‘freshness’ to a deep-fried indulgent snack. Order for one of these as soon as you arrive at Thotada Mane.

Rotti Platter
A wholesome plate of three rotties, rice, spinach and raagi, topped with a generous dollop of butter and served with a niger seed chutney, uchilu pudi and curd combo, and a knock-your-socks-off spicy village condiment of green chillies, mensu. The rotties are ‘kadak’, crisp around the edges, and loaded with flavour. The akki rotti, infused with onions, dill, green chillies, cumin and more, was my favourite. The spinach rotti is a rice rotti infused with the ‘dulling’ green notes of spinach, the raagi rotti on the other hand is quite earthy in its flavour. The uchila pudi, with its fibrous nuttiness, tart fervour of tamarind and slight sweetness of jaggery makes for a great combination with the rotties, especially when combined with the yoghurt. And for those with a festish for spicy heat, the mensu will be most appealing!

Meals
The sort of traditional meal you would taste perhaps if you were invited to a home in Srirangapatna. A sumptuous thaali weighed down by a dry palya for the day, saagu, sambhar, rasam, puri, homemade yoghurt and rice. You also have the option of opting for chapattis or parottas. The vegetables are fresh and crunchy, sourced from the nearby villages, the preparations tasty and comforting in their flavours. The Maddur vade makes for a nice, crisp touch, and the kai obbattu, served for dessert, helps round up this indulgent meal. The sort of satisfying meal that will lull you into a quick catnap in the lush green setting of Thotada Mane before you set out on the road again.
