In this journey through the rich history of the city of Buenos Aires, together with UNOPS and Listos Para Rodar, we tell you about the historical and cultural importance of La Manzana de las luces.
The Manzana de las Luces is one of the main historical complexes of the city and houses several of the oldest buildings, such as the Church of San Ignacio, which is considered the oldest still standing in Buenos Aires, the work of the Jesuits who had settled there.
Below the Manzana de las Luces run some of the tunnels built in colonial times, used for defense and smuggling. As if it were a trip back in time, whoever visits the Manzana de las Luces will be able to have a better idea of what Buenos Aires was like before Independence, visiting the Church of San Ignacio, the Hall of Representatives, the Missions Attorney's Office and the 17th century tunnels (these last two, closed for restoration).
This site was identified for the first time with that name in an article in the newspaper "El Argos" in 1821. It was named after the cultural institutions that operated there: the Colegio de San Ignacio -today the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires-, the old building of the University of Buenos Aires, the first theater, the first museum in the city, the Royal Printing House for Foundling Children and the National Library.
