Angelika Kirchschlager has a wide-ranging voice, versatile, rich and sensual. She has become a matchless interpreter of Mozart, Schubert, Mahler, Richard Strauss and Brahms, though she is perfectly happy to sing contemporary music, and is equally at ease in Sondheim, rendering his songs with an awareness of his verbal dexterity that is astonishing given that English is not her first language. Her approach to her art is summed up in her assertion: "The voice is a way to express your feelings. You don't just want to show it off: that's not very interesting, even if it's beautiful."
