VENICE BEACH – On February 21, 2023, Daisy, known as Wa, was seen tending to a community garden along the Venice Beach Boardwalk, reinforcing her commitment to fostering green spaces and interdependence.
Wa, who has become a familiar figure in the area, emphasized the importance of nurturing both plants and relationships. With the help of friends and passersby, she watered trees, flowers, and fruit-bearing plants—carefully avoiding cacti, as she was reminded they require minimal water.
“This garden is like my second family,” she said, explaining that the space represents more than just a collection of plants—it is a place of connection and mutual support. Wa described her philosophy of interdependence, choosing to rely on shared resources and relationships rather than monetary exchange. “I won’t accept money—I’d rather have community,” she explained.
As she worked, Wa pointed out new additions to the garden, including a mango tree and plans for a red tiger banana tree, known for its striking striped leaves. She noted that the raised planters help protect the growing roots and prevent excessive digging, ensuring long-term sustainability.
Her vision extends beyond the boardwalk. She has coordinated with local sanitation workers and property managers to expand the green initiative, working toward the creation of a "food forest" that provides nourishment for both people and wildlife. Wa also spoke of ongoing discussions with LADWP about potential water sources to further support the project.
“We’re not just planting trees—we’re creating a space where nature and people thrive together,” she said. “If we listen to what the plants and animals need, we can make this a paradise.”
Wa remains a strong advocate for maintaining Venice’s unique character, urging the community to embrace its natural, untamed spirit rather than modeling it after neighboring cities. “Let Venice be Venice,” she said. “This is where people come to heal, to be free.”
As she continues her work, Wa welcomes anyone to join in, help with the garden, or simply stop by to connect. “Come find me,” she said with a smile. “Or I’ll find you.”
