Note that it varies depending on whether your spouse is a U.S. citizen or a green card holder and whether you’re in the U.S. or abroad. I start with the basics: filing Form I-130, Petition for an Alien Relative, and getting a case number from USCIS. I go over key steps like submitting Form I-485 for Adjustment of Status, Form I-765 for work authorization, and Form I-131 for travel permissions. If you’re married to a U.S. citizen and living in the U.S., things can move faster, especially if you file forms together. For those married to green card holders or living outside the U.S., the wait can be longer due to visa bulletin backlogs and extra consular processing.

I also talk about the importance of keeping your status legal and not overstaying if you’re married to a green card holder. Plus, I give tips on how to avoid delays by submitting complete paperwork and preparing for possible interviews with USCIS or at a U.S. consulate!
