A spring woodland walk in the English countryside, with a visit to a working water mill. Welcome to Acorn Bank, a National Trust property in the Eden Valley, on the edge of the English Lake District.
Today's walk is a nice slow wander through spring woodland. The wild garlic is in full bloom and it is spectacular. All around we can hear the buzzing of bees and the birds singing. White blossom is everywhere. We linger and enjoy the spectacle, it only lasts a couple of weeks each year.
Eventually, we make our way slowly to the mill. It's thought there would have been have been a mill on the site for at least 800 years, potentially even back to Norman times (1,000 years ago). The mill fell into disrepair in the 1930's and 40's. It was taken over by the National Trust in 1950. Full restoration finally took place in 2010 and milling commenced again in 2013. A more comprehensive history can be found on their website - https://www.acornbankwatermill.org.uk/
The birds wheeling and swooping around the mill are swallows. The plentiful supply of insects around the water and the nooks and crannies in the roofspace provides them with food and shelter. It's early May and they will have just arrived from their winter sites in Africa. There is plenty of activity as they have a catch up chat, bicker over nesting sites and fly around each other, possibly a territorial or mating display? A magical end to an enchanting day.
I hope you enjoy this walk. If you do, please like and share, to help me to grow. Thank you for watching
