Exploring Downtown L.A. w/ Kids: Grand Central Market, Angels Flight, The Broad, LA Central Library

It was the final weekend before the new school year. We decided to take a day and spend it in Downtown Los Angeles. Initially we thought we would grab some food at Grand Central Market. With the number of delicious stalls, we were sure we’d find something that piqued our interests and appetites. But we found ourselves walking through the market and could not resist the call of Maccheroni Republic, one of our favorite Italian restaurants. So we headed there for lunch instead.

We decided to forego dessert and headed back into Grand Central Market to find some edible treats. The variety was somewhat overwhelming but we ended up trying some peach donuts from The Donut Man Jim and mini pancakes from Teddy’s Tiny Bites. And once we were well sugared up, we marched back out into the streets.

The Angel’s Flight Railway is just across the street. It has been around since 1901 and is still operational. You can pay the fare in cash or use your Tap card to ride the 300 feet (with a vertical gain of just under 100 feet). We played the tourist role and got in line for this unique historical remnant. After that we were planning to walk towards the Walt Disney Symphony Hall but as we passed the Broad Museum, we noticed they had timed entry tickets for free and they were giving out tickets for the time we were walking by. So we electronically nabbed tickets and took a stroll through this famous contemporary art museum. After the museum, we decided to walk down to the LA Centra Library where we knew the kids would have something to entertain themselves with. We ended up resting and recharging in the cool air while the kids read through multiple books.
