“Ti Bulan Ditoy Balbalasang” (Lazaga & Banganan)
"Ti Bulan Ditoy Balbalasang” was written by the prolific Ilocano
writer-translator-poet from Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, Junley Lorenzana Lazaga, a professor at the University of the Philippines Baguio. He was given the Vanaw name “Luvwangon” by our relatives in Talalang. He drew inspiration for this poem from our fieldwork in Balbalasang when we were just starting with the Vanaw Language Documentation Project with Prof. Ruth Molitas Tindaan as project leader and under the auspices of the Cordillera Studies Center (CSC).
“Ti Bulan Ditoy Balbalasang,” a poem by Tagudin scholar-creative writer Junley Lorenzana Lazaga. Posted with permission.
He gave a copy to iVanaw composer-singer Ceasar Brent Saboy Banganan (b. 12 May 1964) who later turned it into a song. Ceasar is a recording artist whose first album, Mankapiyaan, contains 13 songs in Banao, Ilokano and English (see below). The recordings were made in collaboration with ethnopop artist Edison Balansi, proprietor of The Living Anitos studio in Bulanao, Tabuk, Kalinga. Almost all of Ceasar’s compositions center on the village life of the Banao, his materials are drawn from local folklore, and his tunes unmistakably bear the influence of country music. He is now working on his second album.
