Eyad Masad of Texas A&M University delivered the 2022 Carl Monismith Lecture on May 2, 2023. His lecture is titled "The Role of Advanced Characterization Methods and Micromechanics in Achieving Resilient and Sustainable Asphalt Pavements."
The ASCE Geo-Institute (G-I) has established a Lecture in recognition of Professor Carl L. Monismith's contribution to Pavement Engineering. Professor Monismith's teaching and research career in pavement technology, at the University of California, Berkeley, spans more than 50 years. Throughout this period, he has mentored numerous graduate students who have disseminated advances in pavement technology around the world.
The C. L. Monismith Lecture will be awarded annually for outstanding research contributions in Pavement Engineering.
Dr Masad's Monismith Lecture will give an overview of key elements for the design and construction of high performing, sustainable, and resilient asphalt pavements. These elements are aligned with the environmentally inspired objectives of achieving asphalt pavements with net-zero carbon emissions and countering climate change. Consequently, the presentation will highlight examples of micromechanics-based models and multi-scale characterization methods used to improve pavement performance, optimize asphalt pavement recycling, and design low-energy mixes. The presentation will also discuss new horizons for the discovery and design of innovative asphaltic materials through data-informed computational models.

Dr. Eyad Masad is a professor in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University and a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Program at Texas A&M at Qatar. He is also the Executive Director of Global Initiatives in the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station. He received his BSc from the University of Jordan and his MSc and PhD from Washington State University. Dr. Masad is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He is the recipient of the James Laurie Prize in 2019, the Turner award in 2022, and the Monismith lecture in 2022 from ASCE . Dr. Masad research focuses on constitutive modeling of geomaterials, micromechanical characterization of materials, and analysis and design of pavement systems.
