📙 Digital Eclipses' 'Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration' seems like it's the greatest historical game collection ever made. Over 100 games, documentary material, and a nice frontend.
Maze Invaders (1981) is an Atari prototype game that was cancelled, but was released for this collection. It's a take on the maze game genre with more open levels.
Crystal Castles (1983) looks cool with its neat isometric backgrounds, and it was very popular at the time, getting 8 different home ports. It's another maze game, but played with a trackball. I think the game feels quite awkward to play, I never really got why it was so popular.
Food Fight (1983) by General Computer Corporation is a fun multidirectional shooter where you throw food instead of bullets. It's fun and silly.
The final game in this video, is a landmark in computer graphics, and a fun and unique game. I, Robot from 1984 has flat shaded 3D graphics, and is possibly the first game ever to fully render its display using this type of graphics in real-time. The gameplay is a mix of Pac-Man and Sentinel (another game using this type of graphics, but not in realtime). You're traverse a maze, and you can jump, but only when the eye is not looking. And between stages, it turns into a space shooter. So cool.
