Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. My baby is 5 months old and seems really hungry, can I start weaning?
A. The Department of Health and the World Health Organisation recommend exclusive breastfeeding until the age of 6 months. This is because breastmilk and formula milk provide all your baby's nutritional needs until then and also because introducing solids too soon can lead to increased risk of allergy and infection for your baby. Ideally wait until around 6 months to start weaning. Be prepared to introduce iron sources into the diet quite soon after starting weaning as baby's iron stores are starting to dwindle at 6 months. If you are going to start early, begin with vegetables and fruit.
Q. My baby doesn't seem to like the food I am making him, should I give him jars and pouches or the food I know that he definitely likes instead?
A. Babies are born with an innate taste for sweetness. The have also gotten very used to only having milk. You should expect your baby to make all sorts of funny faces as they try new foods. Also keep in mind that if they are refusing food, it could be to do with any number of things e.g. teething, tiredness, fullness, over-hungry, wet or dirty nappy etc. The best food for your baby is homemade. Your aim is to keep providing variety and never give up on a food. Aim for your baby to start getting used to the foods that you hope he will be eating when he is older.
Q. Do I need to keep boiling and cooling water before giving to baby as a drink?
A. No, from 6 months baby can have water straight from the tap.
Q. Can my baby eat the same food as me?
A. Yes! With the exception of honey, salt, sugar, unpasteurised milk, yoghurt and cheese, raw fish or shellfish, marlin, swordfish and whole nuts until 1 year old, you baby can eat the same foods as the rest of the family - just adapted according to texture for their age and stage.
