Composed by Georg Friedrich Händel (1685 - 1759). From The Triumph of Time and Truth, HWV 71.
Lea Desandre, mezzo-soprano
Ensemble Jupiter
In the final air (‘Guardian Angels, oh, protect me'), Handel continues to give Beauty more sober and reflective music. The air is marked Largo e staccato, includes an oboe solo and is set in E major. E major is only used on this single occasion in an air and as a result makes the moment particularly special. The text depicts Beauty calling the guardian angels to protect her and guide her to a life of Virtue.
This aria was sung by Giulia Frasi, who became Handel's leading soprano until the end of his life.— Matthew Gardner, Handel and Maurice Greene's Circle at the Apollo Academy: The Music and Intellectual Contexts of Oratorios, Odes and Masques, 2008
