In this video, we are excited to take you deep into the heart of East Africa as we uncover some fascinating and lesser-known facts about Uganda, officially known as the Republic of Uganda.

Uganda is a landlocked country bordered by Kenya to the east, South Sudan to the north, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Rwanda to the southwest, and Tanzania to the south. It also shares Lake Victoria with Kenya and Tanzania, making it one of the three Great Lakes kings. The country lies within the African Great Lakes region and also straddles the equator, giving it a lush, tropical landscape.

The dominant religion in Uganda is Christianity, followed by Islam, and the country is home to over 56 ethnic groups, each with its own unique language and culture. With a rich history, vibrant traditions, and an incredibly young and entrepreneurial population, Uganda is truly a country worth knowing more about.

Number one: Uganda built its own car.
While many African nations rely entirely on imported vehicles, Uganda took an unexpected step—it made its own. This ambitious project began with students at Makerere University, who developed a prototype that caught the attention of the government. The result? Kiira Motors Corporation. Their flagship vehicle, the Kiira EV SMACK, is Africa’s first electric hybrid sedan. It operates using a rechargeable battery and a fuel-powered generator, combining environmental awareness with innovation. Designed and assembled in Uganda, it’s a bold symbol of what the continent’s youth and technical talent can achieve when given support and resources. For a landlocked country, Uganda is driving in a surprisingly forward direction.

Number two: The equator runs right through Uganda.
Yes, Uganda is one of only a handful of countries in the world straddling the equator. The line that divides the globe into Northern and Southern Hemispheres cuts right through the country, about 75 kilometers south of Kampala. Travelers can stop at one of several equator monuments and experience a fascinating natural demonstration: water draining clockwise on one side, counter-clockwise on the other, and straight down right on the line. It’s a geographical feature that blends science and tourism in one unforgettable photo opportunity.

Number three: Uganda is the source of the Nile.
The Nile River, the longest river in the world, begins its epic journey in Uganda. Its source is found at Jinja, where water flows from Lake Victoria into what is known as the White Nile. From here, it travels over 6,600 kilometers northward through South Sudan, Sudan, and Egypt before finally reaching the Mediterranean Sea. This origin point has long been a source of pride for Uganda and a magnet for explorers, historians, and tourists alike. The power and significance of the Nile starts right here—at the heart of Uganda.
Number four: It’s home to Africa’s largest lake.
Lake Victoria, known locally as Nalubaale, is the largest lake in Africa and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. Spanning over 68,800 square kilometers, it borders Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, but Uganda holds the lion’s share. The lake supports millions of people through fishing, transport, and tourism. It's also a biodiversity hotspot, home to hundreds of fish species—some of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Despite being named by European explorers after Queen Victoria, its significance to East Africa far predates colonial naming.
