The programme looks at conditions in the forces of both sides and tells the story of the incredible southern victory at Chancellorsville in May 1863. It looks at death of ‘Stonewall’ Jackson and the effect it had on the southern cause. We hear about Lee’s second invasion of the north and about the battle of Brandy Station, where the Southern cavalry forces lost their aura of invincibility. And, of course, the programme tells the story of the battle of Gettyburg, the three-day bloodbath that would prove to be the turning point of the war
