PAINTING VIDEO DESCRIPTION – This painting tutorial will take you through easy step-by-step instructions on how to draw and paint this powerful and beautiful night scene landscape painting "SKY LANTERNS” with acrylic paint. Ever wonder what those lit lanterns mean that you see floating in the air? Thanks to Google, here's what I learned—the “Kongming lantern”, (translation to mean sky lantern), is often called a "Chinese lantern" and is made of paper and has a small fire suspended through an opening at the bottom of it and is lifted into the sky by the hot air, similarly to how a hot air balloon operates. Also referred to as “sky candles” or “fire balloons”, the tradition of releasing these lanterns into the atmosphere is celebrated in festivals all over Asia, as well as the rest of the world. Go ahead and Google “sky lantern festival” and be amazed at the results—Thailand, China, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, India, Taiwan, all have their annual festivals, but I’m sure you’ll see a few in your area too. I did, there are sky lantern festivals in Pennsylvania, Vermont, Connecticut, and Massachusetts—just a few hours' drive from me. But what does it all mean? Steeped in Chinese tradition, the release of these lanterns was first used in war as a way for armies to communicate with one another, and, over time, people started using them at events and festivals to symbolize family bonds and unity. Today, releasing these mini-hot air balloons can be seen at just about any occasion for any reason: as a fun birthday party activity, to signifying an accomplishment at a graduation party, to symbolizing the soul moving on at a funeral, as an exciting way to reveal a baby’s gender, as a business team building exercise, or at a wedding instead of releasing doves or throwing rice. In fact, this ancient tradition has evolved into a modern classic. So, join me and celebrate this inspirational gesture and paint this energetic image as you imagine your hands releasing a night light into the sky, and share with the world your own personal significance behind this time-honored tradition inspiring creativity and sparking conversation. The first lesson you’ll learn in this beginner level painting tutorial is how to paint a background with both dark rich colors which will add to the mysterious and alluring nighttime mood. After learning how to use a dot-to-dot drawing method, you’ll draw an outline for your hands and for your Khom Loi, followed by applying a simple base coat to work off of. By using a simple layering process to blend the skin tone you’ll add the final details to give the hands volume, form and movement, creating the sense that they just released a sky lantern. Then you’ll use a directional brushstroke for added depth and dimension to the lantern’s exterior paper creating the illusion of them being illuminated by the fire inside. Finish your floating candles by adding highlights and shadows to develop texture that will embody the realistic fabric, creating a 3-D photo realistic effect and appearance. Next, you’ll use quick dabs of paint to add distinct impressionistic marks to all your small lanterns that are floating off into the distance. Using only 3 brushes, 7 colors, and one brush per step, you'll create this image that is not just a beautiful painting, but an easy painting for beginners. Paint alone, or with friends! Have a date night, paint party, or virtual paint night. Paint with gouache, oil paint, or water colour, any medium will work! So, let's get painting and let's get sipping!
