When I started surfing in 1970 in Pacific Beach, watching a surf film at the local theater was an amazing experience. Everyone packed in to watch the latest flick, the aroma of weed wafting through the air, hooting and hollering while incredible waves from across the globe rolled across the screen. Those times, and the surf culture of the 1970s, had a strong influence on my life that persists to this day. Notably, many early 70s films portrayed the ongoing shift in awareness to nature, clean living, and environmental consciousness as surfers traveled the world looking for the perfect wave. So, my top five films are biased towards those times and the nostalgia they hold for dawn patrols, road trips, and uncrowded waves.
