We are at a turning point in history where the role of business in society is being increasingly challenged. The business as usual (BAU) logic within which businesses operate has dominated the economy for decades now. And despite some tweaks to its core assumptions, it has been proven that BAU holds back the realisation of long-term wellbeing of all people and planet.
Governments, investors and other stakeholders are putting immense pressure on businesses to meet globally agreed goals on climate, nature, and society. Businesses will need to deliver on these expectations in a way that maintains their resilience and financial health. But such a task is made ever more challenging by near term shocks such as rising inflation and increasingly prevalent climate, nature, and social emergencies. Besides, the wider operating context is not yet completely supportive of businesses that want to challenge BAU thinking as markets and regulation do not always reward sustainable business performance.
Developing and embedding a purpose with clear societal benefits is a practical approach for businesses to navigate these tensions, spot opportunities for new forms of value creation and align business activities with delivering sustainable outcomes for society. But how can businesses deliver on these rising expectations if they do not know how their present performance compares to organisational forms geared towards delivering true sustainability?
With the support of the Business Transformation Group, University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) has developed the Business Transformation Framework (BTF), a tool that sets out 12 enablers presented onto four organisational typologies, distinguished by different levels of alignment to sustainability and purpose, against which businesses can self-assess. The BTF aims to enable businesses to diagnose their alignment to sustainability and purpose, identify gaps between their current and aspirational position, and establish key levers and associated actions that will help advance their transformation.
Purpose of the webinar
In this webinar, CISL brings together members of the Business Transformation Group, a collaborative group of forward-looking, leading international companies, to share insights on the piloting process of the framework and how this is supporting their transformation journey. The panel discussion will be moderated by CISL’s Director of Business Strategy, Ben Kellard, one of the main authors of the tool.
