The term “Binliner” referred to block freight trains carrying compacted household waste in swap-body containers, moved from city transfer depots to landfill sites — effectively a containerised rubbish service. In the early ti mid 1990s, Calvert in Buckinghamshire became one of the key destinations. Several regular services brought waste containers into the former brick-pit landfill, most notably from Brentford/Northolt in London and from the Bristol/Bath area. These workings were widely known among enthusiasts and in timetables as “the Calvert Binliner.” Filmed here on two occasions, 1993 & 1995, the bins is seen both Class 56 and 37 hauled in and around Claydon NLE Junction.
